why 5 holes?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

have you ever wonder why there is 5 holes in the huge button that’s on the street in the fashion district of NYC?
Kiosk
i never thought about it until i saw this question somewhere on a website. so here it is, the explanation from the book How to Design: Logos, Symbols, and Icons.

the case: since the fashion center district had no identifying visual mark setting it apart as a newly created district in New York, a design firm, Pentagram, was asked to design a prominent icon labeling an area of mostly multiple-storage building.

the solution: the solution is a whimsical buttom symbolizing the trafe and the organization. because color is a subject of contention among designers, the button appears in black. Also, the mark has an extra hole that creates a subliminal “F,” for fashion.

Graphic Designer’s MUST SEE! be aware of what ur logo might imply….

just look at this site:
http://www.b3ta.com/features/phalliclogoawards/

damn. some are really bad.
just look at the winner: “Brazillian Institute for Oriental Studies”
a yellow temple/house in front of a sunset, how romantic is that.
but now they’ve pointed it out, they screwed up the image. man~

Also, i may have already told some of you, but i just can’t stop thinking everytime i walked past Astor Place. the logo for the new residential building looks so much like a Carefree pad….. with wings….

and yeah I realized that Timberland logo really DO look like Batzumaru A LOT. XD
(have to be looked from a distant tho)

it’s like Dali’s painting, u can always look at it different ways.
speaking of Dali…. all the tickets are SOLD OUT in phili >___<
I ssoooo want to go…. hope it’ll come to New York in the future….

Only YOU have the power to save Toby

the weirdest website:
http://savetoby.com/

this guy saved a CUTE bunny Toby, now he is going to eat it, unless we buy from his online store and he gets $50,000 by the end of June. he even has the recipes ready!!! How weird is that?
is that a pure marketing strategy? or is he just a weirdo?
whichever it is, this idea seems to work! so many save toby products are sold~

“i’ll eat my pet if u don’t give me money” definitely an innovative fundraising strategy we should keep in mind :P
my co-worker said:
i bought a t-shirt from this guy.
it’s so funny.
he’s not gonna eat that bunny, but i bet he’ll make a ton of money.
for a real kick, read some of his hate mail!!!!

yeah go read the hate mails. hillarious!!!
wahahahahah now i want to buy a save toby t-shirt too!

************************************************************

after reading the updates on the site, i found that savetoby had actually been in NBC Nightly XD
and got a book deal that will be released this year!

when architecture meets shoes

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

At lunch break, I randomly walked into a boutique shoe shop and found this brand, very interesting concept shoes.
the brand is call United Nude. it’s not a fashion brand. it’s rather an “emotional” brand.
the story begins when a Dutch architect met an English shoemaker at a bar. the concept shoes was born– focusing on iconic products rather than board seasonal ranges. “the products are conceptual: re-intrepertation of architecture, archettypes or existing classic object.”

Shoe
as I stand there finished reading through the whole booklet about this brand, i almost got my credit card out and bought the “Mobius”. (i didn’t after all. wait till a discount bah :P) at the same time, i feel so glad i can be in NYC. a simple lunch break at a boutique store can feel like a shopping trip and an art exhibition experience all in one :P
United Nude reminded me of the remarkable exhibition I saw several years ago (2000 in NYC)– Issey Miyake: Making Things. Issey Miyake also love to use Architectural approach for his innovative designs. he is one of the few fashion designers i admire who always push the limit through material, concepts, forms, and bodies.

I have to say that the fact that he installed the show as an art exhibition rather than a catwalk fashion show is brilliant enough. but then…. ppl like me, who is willing to come all the way from Albany and buy tickets to his wonderful exhibition, can’t effort to buy his stuff at all. so maybe catwalk fashion shows with beautiful models can reach more of the money spending crowd. more cost-effective in the marketing prespective :P

Dance Showcase

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

Today we went to Maggie’s dance showcase.
Maggie hurt her leg but still managed to take the stage~ u look so hot in that red top! :P
(maggie, altho it’s a pity that u are not in the WHITE group, u are still the BEST! can’t wait for the august one! but until then, rest more for your leg please)
Cimg2431

watching the show, which is all preformed by students (but mostly with a lot of experience), i can see why I admire dancing so much, altho i know i can never be a good dancer in this life. It’s about the stage, the passion, and the attitudes. and yeah, having fun. after all, that’s what dancing is all about, right? :)
Maybe I should keep on going to my hip hop dance performance workshop next semester.  altho i always complaint the time and efforts it  takes, plus i am not a good dancer~ but… i’ll get better right? :) and plus it made my body firmer and tanned (ok… maybe not tanned… that’s from Cancun trip :P)  also today on stage, i saw a 60 year old lady in the beginner’s ballet dance. she is beautiful. i wish I have the confidence and energy to learn a whole new dance when i  turn 60, or 70…. and dance gracefully on stage.

sing with me~ “I have confidence” from The Sound of Music

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

What will this day be like? I wonder.
What will my future be? I wonder.
It could be so exciting to be out in the world, to be free
My heart should be wildly rejoicing
Oh, what’s the matter with me?

I’ve always longed for adventure
To do the things I’ve never dared
And here I’m facing adventure
Then why am I so scared

A captain with seven children
What’s so fearsome about that?

Oh, I must stop these doubts, all these worries
If I don’t I just know I’ll turn back
I must dream of the things I am seeking
I am seeking the courage I lack

The courage to serve them with reliance
Face my mistakes without defiance
Show them I’m worthy
And while I show them
I’ll show me

So, let them bring on all their problems
I’ll do better than my best
I have confidence they’ll put me to the test
But I’ll make them see I have confidence in me

Somehow I will impress them
I will be firm but kind
And all those children (Heaven bless them!)
They will look up to me

And mind me with each step I am more certain
Everything will turn out fine
I have confidence the world can all be mine
They’ll have to agree I have confidence in me

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides which you see I have confidence in me

Strength doesn’t lie in numbers
Strength doesn’t lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumbers
When you wake up — Wake Up!

It tells me all I trust I lead my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone
(Oh help!)

I have confidence in confidence alone
Besides which you see I have confidence in me!

people change.

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

People change.
or do they?
maybe they don’t.
just that you think you know them.
and give them assumptions and expectations.

then you get dissapointed
then you realize
u don’t know them.
not a bit.

people change.
ya… just an excuse.
