MTA Xmas poem….

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

got this poem from my co-worker, not sure who wrote it:

‘Twas five days before Christmas and all through the town;
Not a train was up running, they’d all been shut down.

The turnstiles were locked and the stations were cleared,
in hopes that Old Bloomberg would give them their share.

The workers were nestled all snug in their booths;
Where oft they’re found sleeping, to tell you the truth.
Toussaint wants their pensions to be like the cops’ -
you know, ’cause it’s stressful announcing each stop.

Alas, from the public arose such a clatter,
Their leader seems not to have thought out the matter.

With shoppers not shopping and travel delayed,
public support dwindled, New Yorkers’ nerves frayed.

You dumb, lazy morons! The people did cry.
Pensions the same as the FDNY?
It’ll cost us a fortune, illiterate twits!
The people weren’t happy. In fact, they threw fits.

There’s strength in a union, or so they believed
but not before Christmas - now everyone’s peeved.
It’s terrible timing for stranding the masses;
If Reagan were here he’d have fired your asses

ANTM– and the winner is….

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

I missed last week’s America’s Next Top Model Finale because we attended a monthly debate in L.E.S. about how dating world treats men and women (pretty interesting~ but that’s another story..).
so this week, I was determined not to miss ANTM finale re-run!!!

I knew Nicole is the winner already before i watched the show…
however, after watching it last night, i would say the finale is rather disappointing.
It is not convincing enough for her to win except ONE main reason:
as twiggy stated over and over throughout season 5 “she just looks like a model to me”

the show serves several purposes:
- to reinforce american girls model dream.
- to boost Tyra’s small screen career so she can fade out gracefully from catwalk
- Most importantly, which i believe is the MAIN mission statement of this show, is to educate people that modeling is a respectful career. It is not merely about a pretty face and a hot body, it is about skills, hard work, knowledge, and some intelligence. only the most full-rounded girl that can take criticism and pressure… and be constantly absorbing, can be call a top model.

BUT, despite Nik’s fantastic (and professional) performances throughout the last few competitions, the judges opt for Nicole, which fits perfectly into our stereotype for models: young, PRETTY, whinny, and pretty. oops did i said pretty already?

maybe it would be much helpful if they can interview the judges afterward, and let them give audience a more convincing reasoning of choosing a young american-sweetheart over a stunning beauty who has skills and class.

or maybe it is self-explanatory? a prove that modeling industry IS STILL all about looks. maybe it’s just totally ok for models to be whinny and bitchy and screw up their works from time to time~ because they are beautiful, they can get much more tolerance from others who work with them.

this totally conflicts with this TV show’s mission statement….

oh hell…. whatever~ I wouldn’t worry about Nik’s future modeling career tho. if she consistently deliver her professional attitude and great work, she’ll do GREAT. the real world competition is just starting!!
